Community Overview
Since the discovery of its Canadian Malartic gold deposit, Osisko Mining Corporation has informed and consulted the Malartic community throughout the development of its open pit mine project.
The creation of a Community Consultation Group helps Osisko listen and respond to residents' concerns, and a Community Relations Centre, located in the heart of Malartic, opened its doors in March 2008 to facilitate interaction between residents and Osisko representatives.
Four major issues guide Osisko in its work with the Malartic community:
- The need to maximize economic benefits for the region
- The need to maximize the structuring nature of the project
- The proximity of the future mine to the town
- The need to relocate a neighbourhood
The resettlement of more than 150 homes and the construction of five institutional buildings began in 2008 and will be completed by 2010. The collaboration of residents and the town council was crucial to the success of this project.
A sustainable development fund (FEMO: Fonds de développement durable pour Malartic) was created in 2008 to ensure a lasting heritage for future generations. It represents a first for the Canadian mining industry. The fund will improve the quality of life for residents and promote community growth.
